Margaret Leng Tan knew John Cage for the last 11 years of his life, from 1981 to 1992. In this radio show, she begins with describing her performance program “Through the Silence” that she put together in order to explore Cages music. She speaks of how she deciphered the music Cage’s “Chess Pieces” painting and performed it. Other subjects include Cage’s “Fire” series of artworks and his method of creating them; Cage’s view of time and space; star map notation; The history behind the making of Bacchanale and the beginnings of the prepared piano; how Cage felt art=life=theater, how he felt they were inseperable from each other; Cage’s ideas on errors and how we react to that as a performer or audience member; performing on the toy piano and other toy instruments.
